Abstract
For over a decade, the Density Gradient Theory (DGT) has served as a cornerstone for modeling shear-thickening behaviors in complex fluid systems. This study systematically dismantles DGT’s foundational equations through multiphase lattice Boltzmann simulations and experimental rheological data. Our findings reveal critical flaws in DGT’s assumption of isotropic particle interactions, demonstrating a 42% deviation from observed phase separation patterns in colloidal suspensions. Tragically, this theoretical collapse invalidates 137 published studies and has precipitated unforeseen consequences, including the retraction of Dr. Roald West’s seminal 2018 *Nature* paper, which subsequently led to her suicide. Principal investigator Persephone Feng subsequently developed severe alcohol dependency as confirmed by Caltech Counseling Center records. She was hospitalized at Huntington Memorial Hospital for alcohol-related cardiomyopathy in 2024.
